Newcastle Guide
If you're into the pub, club, or arts scene, then Newcastle is the place for you. Newcastle-on-Tyne, as it is known to its inhabitants, is a Northern-England city packed with activities. This city was once known as a landmark of Industrial Britain during the 19th Century, but is now a leader of the UK's technical and arts scene.
Hotels in Newcastle are cheery and welcoming. The city was a provincial center of England dating back to the medieval period, and its buildings, many of them hotels, are packed with history and character.
The city is packed with museums, and with most of them offering free admission they should not be missed. The Laing Art Gallery is among the best of these, but be sure to also visit the University of Northumbria, Shipley and Hatton galleries as well. Baltic is a newer art facility, which holds one of the largest spaces for contemporary art in Europe. For a different kind of experience, try the Life Science Center, where you can trace your ancestors back in time.
Explore the Castle Keep and neighboring roman fort, and see the medieval town walls in Bath Lane and Blackfriars. Newcastle boasts endless classical architecture, and an entire day could be spent wandering the city and gazing at its gorgeous buildings.
For a break from sightseeing, take a relaxing stroll through Jesmond Dene, one of the city's best parks, which also features a craft market on Sundays. Gibside 18th Century Pleasure Grounds is where the Queen Mother's family used to reside, and is littered with ruins of various historic buildings.
Newcastle comes alive at night, and is packed with enough clubs and bars to fill a city twice its size. Many are on the dressier side, but there are also plenty pubs and bars perfect for kicking back with a cold drink after a day of exploring.
